Treatment at the DeStefano Chiropractic Center

Chiropractic:
This is the most important treatment you may receive at the office. Chiropractic is the treatment of the spine to remove interference of the nerves and restore the body to health. There are many patients who contact our office for the treatment of conditions not normally seen in most other chiropractic offices. These conditions most often include sports injuries or difficult cases relating to the muscles or nerves. Some of these patients will receive other treatments including Active Release Techniques soft tissue management care, intersegmental traction, massage, specific stretching also known as "Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation", exercises, and home exercise instruction.

Active Release Techniques soft tissue treatment (ART):
This is a hands on treatment which is applied by Dr. DeStefano to specific muscular and nerve conditions which occur as the direct result of trauma. The trauma, for most patients, is either cumulative (over time), acute (caused at one time), or pressure related (posture or bad habits). These injuries to the soft tissues of the body cause adhesions which can bind the coverings of the muscles, called fascia, to adhere to each other. There may also be adhesions between muscles and nerves called nerve entrapments, which can cause conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome and numbness and tingling in the arms and legs. There are currently no Doctors who specialize in the treatment of muscle or soft tissue related disorders. Dr. DeStefano is not only credentialed to use this technique, but has been selected to instruct other doctors, of all different specialties, to utilize this revolutionary treatment.

Intersegmental traction:
This treatment is important for some patients to both assist in the mobilization of the spinal vertebrae and relax the patient's muscles. The treatment involves a table where the patient will lie on their back and feel the gentle massaging effects of the therapeutic rollers as the table slowly moves back and forth. This table is recommended only in cases in which the Doctor feels the patient would benefit.

Massage:
Dr. DeStefano has trained and certified massage therapists on staff. These professional therapists are available as both a compliment to your chiropractic care or used independently for therapeutic purposes. Massages are available at 15min., 30min., and one hour time slots. Dr. DeStefano will discuss any questions you may have about massage and how it may help your condition.

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (therapeutic stretching): Recent studies show that improper stretching may not only be useless, but may also promote other injuries. This type of stretching is therapeutic and is assisted by Dr. DeStefano to assure the maximum benefits. PNF, as it is called, has been shown to speed the healing process and decrease the number of treatments needed to regain your health. Dr. DeStefano will discuss this and other forms of stretching when it is indicated.

Exercise and home exercise instruction:
There are times during the corrective or strengthening phase of care it may be required for you to do exercises to assist Dr. DeStefano in properly rehabilitating your injury or condition. Some of these exercises may be done at home. When you can perform these exercises at home, the Dr. will demonstrate how to do them, their purpose and possibly supply you with some simple equipment. There are times when it is necessary to do the exercises in the office under professional supervision. If you have a question about exercise, make sure you speak to Dr. DeStefano.
